Since the US-led project of a Central American canal was finally realized in Panama, research about it tends to be conceived as the study of the history of the Panama Canal. However, this paper investigates the construction of the Nicaragua Canal, which began before the decision to construct the Panama Canal was made, as part of the overseas territorial actions by the United States. In addition, this article shows that according to the provisions of the Clayton-Bulwer Treaty in 1850 between the United States and Britain, the United States was restricted for a certain period from working alone on building the isthmus canal, and the process transitioned toward actual canal construction only after that period ceased., 10, P}, pages = {107--126}, title = {19世紀後半のアメリカにおける中米地峡運河建設論 ― クレイトン=ブルワー条約を巡る制約と建設地論争の膨張論的進展 ―}, volume = {22}, year = {2019}, yomi = {カナザワ, ヒロアキ} }
